MLPE FAQ

General Questions

1. Where do I go to check my placement results?

Log into Bearweb, under “Student Academic Services” open the New Student Dashboard. Your placement result should be under the “Testing” tab on the left.

2. Why are my placement results not in Bearweb?
  • The result will appear in Bearweb immediately, unless you were placed in Spanish heritage track courses, 1304, 2304, or 3304.

  • If you were placed in SPA 1304, 2304, or 3304, it takes 24-48 hours for the result to show up in Bearweb.

  • Once the result is in Bearweb, you can register.

3. Why can’t I register for the course I was placed in?

If you are registering for 1301, 1302, or 2310, make sure to register for the lab also. You may have to enter both CRNS in the boxes at the same time. You can’t register for one and then the other.

4. Do I have to take a placement test?

If you plan to take Spanish, then YES. If you want to take French or German and if you have experience with these languages (taken a course, have lived in a country where they use these languages, etc.), then you need to take the placement test. If you have NO experience using French or German, you can register for 1301

5. I want to take a language other than Spanish, French, or German. Do I need to take a placement test?

If you have any experience with the language you want to take, then you need to send an email to the division director for that language: Dr. Xin Wang (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean); Dr. Cristian Bratu (Italian); Dr. Gabrielle Miller (Portuguese); Dr. Adrienne Harris (Russian).

6. Can I retake my placement test?

Yes, however, it has to be six weeks after your last placement test.

7. How does credit by exam work?

Placement exams do not bear credit; therefore, a student does not receive credit for courses below the level into which he or she has tested based on the MLPE score alone. For information on credit by exam, visit this website. Before proceeding, please read the policy page.
